Beauty brands are born all of the time but only one was born out of a real photo shoot studio; the legendary Smashbox Studios in Los Angeles. Smashbox describes its formation as the slang for a box style camera that was introduced in the early 1900s as an affordable way to capture everyday life in what were coined as “snapshots.” The box style camera remains one of the most iconic cameras ever made. Smashbox is defined as the iconic studio and cosmetics brand known for empowering women everywhere to be their most beautiful selves.
Makeup primer, which most people don’t believe they need to use, is a base for foundation or face makeup that allows it to go on smoother and last longer. Smashbox Cosmetics created the award-winning Photo Finish Foundation Primer which has landed on countless best sellers lists. When applying that primer, Smashbox focuses on the lighting.
Here are two tips Smashbox founder and photographer, Davis Factor shares:
- If you are inside, shoot next to a window. If you’re outdoors, a lightly shaded area is good call to avoid looking too blown out.
- Angle your face downwards and shoot from above. It helps to capture the best light and also highlights your cheekbones and makes your eyes look bigger.
Since their specialty is lighting, #LIGHTMATTERS is a theme with tutorials on their website instructing how to apply make up in different kinds of light. In the age of selfies and devices that help to create better photos on our phones, Smashbox insiders are experts on creating the best lighting to look good in.
